What is a Chemical Peel?

A Chemical Peel is a gentle and non-abrasive exfoliation of the skin. During a chemical peel a serum is applied to the face for a very short period of time, this serum causes the outer most layer of skin to shed.

At the Advanced Skin Care Clinic, our medical aesthetician will cleanse the skin, and gently apply the appropriate peel for your skin. The peel stays on your skin for up to five minutes, the peel will then be neutralized and your skin will be thoroughly cleansed. When the chemical peel is over a moisturizer will be applied to your skin and skin that will be exposed to the sun following treatment will be protected with an SPF.

What skin conditions can be treated with a Chemical Peel?

Our Edmonton chemical peels are available for both men and women for the following:

  • Reduction and removal of age spots or sun damage

  • Treatment of Acne

What serums might be applied to my skin during a chemical peel?

The Jessner Peel

The Jessner Peel is a combination of three chemicals: resorcinol, lactic acid, and salicylic acid. These three ingredients work together to exfoliate the outer layers of skin by breaking up dead skin cells. This peel encourages the natural peeling to start several days after the actual treatment.

Active Ingredient – AFA’s

AFA’s are a new, fully patented skin care product based on the same natural acidic amino acids that preserve the moisture in the skin. AFA’s are know as the non-irritating but highly effective peel because of their carefully balanced ph levels.

Active Ingredient - Kojic Acid

Kojic acid is a byproduct that comes from the process of fermenting rice to make Sake. As a cosmetic product it is excellent for treating and preventing hyper pigmentation. The effectiveness of Kojic acid is increased when it is used quickly reducing exposure to the air.

Active Ingredient – Lactic Acid

Lactic acid is derived from sour milk and offers one of gentlest chemical peels. Excellent for people with sensitive skin, Lactic acid peels help remove germs, dead skin cells and toxins.

Active Ingredient – Glycolic Acid also known as Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA)

Glycolic acid is naturally found in grapes and sugar cane but for the purposes of cosmetic products it is often synthetically made. In skincare glycolic acid is used for exfoliation, chemical peels, acne and anti-aging treatments. Continued treatments using glycolic acid will make skin feel softer, look smoother and appear more radiant.

Active Ingredient – Salicylic Acid also known as Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA)

Salicylic acid is a product that is derived from Asprin making it both an anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial. In cosmetic use, Salicylic acid is excellent for exfoliation and treating acne as encourages the shedding of dead skin deep within the follicle. This keeps the pores clear of blockages and kills bacteria reducing and eliminating acne.

How many chemical peels will I need to have?

The number of chemical peels will vary depending on the condition of your skin and your desired outcome. Typically a series of four to eight treatments are needed for significant results.
